When Michael and Janine Ondina bought this 1920s era Prairie-style home in 2014, a couple of the former owner’s alterations stood out as historically inaccurate: namely, the hair-washing sink in the kitchen and the tanning booth in the breakfast room. The house had operated as a beauty salon before the Ondinas purchased it, mirroring a pattern often seen in Riverside after city planners in the the 1970s rezoned large swaths of the historically residential neighborhood for commercial use.
Fortunately, Mike, the general manager of Evergreen Cemetery, and Janine, the comptroller of a cemetery in Belle Glade, had some experience with a past renovation in the district. They gutted the kitchen, added a bath in the master bedroom as well as a new guest bath, refinished the house’s original floors, added a two-car garage with an apartment, and installed new professional landscaping. Now that their work is done, they appreciate all that Riverside Avondale has to offer.
